Why should I do a board year?
1. Accelerate Your Personal & Professional Growth
A board year is one of the most transformative experiences you can have during your studies. While university equips you with academic knowledge, serving on a board develops the practical skills that truly shape your career: leadership, strategic thinking, responsibility, and collaboration.
You will manage real projects, make decisions that impact over 600 members, work toward concrete goals, and operate within deadlines. Beyond that, you gain deeper self-awareness, understanding how you perform under pressure, what role you naturally assume in a team, and where your strengths lie. These insights will stay with you long after graduation.
2. Build a Powerful Network
Networking is essential, but it doesn’t have to feel forced. A board year integrates networking naturally into everything you do.
As an MAA board member, you will work closely with fellow students, committee members, alumni, and representatives from leading companies. Through events, partnerships, and social gatherings, you build meaningful professional relationships and genuine friendships.
You won’t just collect LinkedIn connections, you’ll create long-term connections that can open doors throughout your career.
3. Strengthen Your CV with Real Leadership Experience
In today’s competitive job market, a degree alone is often not enough. Employers look for initiative, responsibility, and proof of leadership.
Being part of the MAA board demonstrates exactly that. You’ll gain hands-on experience managing committees, organizing large-scale events, collaborating with companies, and overseeing strategic initiatives. This shows future employers that you can take ownership, think strategically, and deliver results.
A board year doesn’t just enhance your CV, it gives you concrete stories and experiences that make you stand out in interviews.
4. Create Unforgettable Memories
A board year is intense, rewarding, and most importantly, a lot of fun.
From monthly drinks across Amsterdam to exclusive events and traditions, you’ll share unique experiences with your fellow board members. One of the highlights is Career Beyond Borders: a five-day international trip with around 30 members to visit inspiring companies, explore a new European city, and strengthen the MAA community.
And of course, the board weekend, a well-deserved getaway just for the board after months of hard work together. It’s a year of growth, connection, and memories you’ll carry with you for life.
What do you get in return?
- Travel expenses, lunch, board suit, and a management grant (salary)
- Board weekend and business trip
- Budget for personal and team training
